types of weddings

6 Articles

One of the first decisions you need to make when planning your wedding is the type of wedding that you want to have.

  • Have you always dreamt of the traditional, huge, white wedding, with both of your entire extended families and all of your friends?

  • Are you looking for a more intimate experience with just a few of your nearest and dearest?

  • Does a private elopement where you and your partner can focus on each other for the entire day sound more like your style?

This decision is going to impact every other step of your wedding planning process, as knowing the group size is key for finding your perfect venue, determining your day-of timeline, and figuring out what services and vendors you'll need.

To help you decide which type of wedding is best for you, I've got some more info about what the different types usually entail and some pros and cons for each.

elopements

Elopements are the smallest type of wedding. Traditionally, an elopement was just the couple getting married in secret, but in the modern day the definition has evolved, dropping the secrecy yet keeping the intimacy.

They're a great option if you want to skip the extra fuss of a larger wedding and focus entirely on the love between you and your partner.

micro weddings

Micro weddings have experienced a boom in popularity since the pandemic, with many couples looking towards smaller, more intimate gatherings to celebrate their wedding. They can be casual or glamorous, but are always fun.

If you don't want a big party but still have loved ones you want to be there for your special day, a micro wedding with 20 or fewer guests is a fantastic option.

small weddings

Small weddings typically have guest lists of between 20 and 50 people, which allows for your nearest and dearest to be in attendance while also keeping numbers small enough that you should be able to actually spend some time with all of your guests.

They're a particularly nice option if you have very tight-knit families and a mix of different friend groups.

medium weddings

Medium weddings are always a popular option for Australian weddings. A guest list of between 50 and 100 people allows you to invite extended family and wider friend circles, while still being suitable for a range of different venue types.

They're a classic option because they allow you to include all of your loved ones and have a celebratory party without things getting too overwhelming.

large weddings

Large weddings provide beautiful, festive atmospheres where you can get married surrounded by all of the people who are important to you as a couple and, often, important to your families.

Usually lavish affairs, large weddings are generally seen today as having more than 100 guests, and are a wonderful option if you have a wide circle of family and friends to celebrate with.

destination weddings

A destination wedding can be any size, but there are many unique things to consider and plan for when you're going to be travelling for your wedding day.

If you and your partner come from different locations, met while travelling, want to get married where you'll be honeymooning, or just want a holiday wedding, then a destination wedding is the perfect option for you.
